What Is an Underline Text Generator?

An underline text generator is a converter that pairs each typed character with an underline mark from Unicode, giving text a line beneath it wherever plain text is accepted. Other names for the same tool are underline font generator, underlined text maker, text underline tool, underline text converter and underline words generator.

How Underline Text Works

Unicode underline uses combining marks: characters with no width that draw under the letter before them. Combining Low Line (U+0332) gives the standard underline, and 6 more marks give other lines: Combining Double Low Line (U+0333), Combining Minus Sign Below (U+0320), Combining Diaeresis Below (U+0324) for dots, Combining Tilde Below (U+0330) for waves, Combining Double Macron Below (U+035F) for a smooth joined line, and Combining Overline (U+0305) for a line above. The generator adds one mark after every letter, and phones and computers draw the line with the text.

How to Use the Underline Text Generator

How to Underline Text in Word, Google Docs, HTML and CSS

To underline text in a document or a web page, use the native underline command, which keeps the words searchable. Here are 5 methods:

• Microsoft Word: press Ctrl + U for a single underline and Ctrl + Shift + D for a double underline. The Font dialog adds dotted, wavy and thick lines plus an underline colour.
• Google Docs: press Ctrl + U on Windows or Cmd + U on a Mac.
• HTML: wrap words in <u>, a tag meant for marking text such as misspellings, and use links for clickable text.
• CSS: set text-decoration: underline, then text-decoration-style: wavy, dotted or double, and text-underline-offset for the gap.
• LaTeX: write \underline{text}, or \uline{text} with the ulem package for lines that break across rows.

Standard Markdown has no underline. Discord reads __text__ as underline, while most Markdown editors read the same code as bold.

Can You Make Red, Blue or Highlighted Underline Text?

No, a Unicode underline takes the colour of the text, so red, blue and highlighted underlines need a document or a web page. Microsoft Word sets an underline colour in the Font dialog, and CSS sets one with text-decoration-color: red. Highlighted text uses the <mark> tag in HTML or the highlighter in Word and Google Docs.
