What Is a Small Text Generator?
A small text generator is a text converter that swaps each letter for a smaller Unicode character, so the words look tiny anywhere plain text goes. The same tool goes by tiny text generator, small font generator, mini text generator, small letters generator and small text converter.
How Small Text Works
Unicode has no complete small alphabet. Small text is a pseudo-alphabet pieced together from 5 Unicode blocks, added over the years for linguists and mathematicians: Spacing Modifier Letters (ʰ ˡ ˢ), Phonetic Extensions (ᵃ ᴀ ᴍ), IPA Extensions (ʙ ɢ ʜ), Superscripts and Subscripts (ⁿ ₐ ₀) and Latin Extended-D (ꜰ ꜱ). A normal a is U+0061, while the superscript ᵃ is U+1D43 and the small cap ᴀ is U+1D00. The small text generator swaps each letter for its tiny twin, and the gaps in those blocks explain why a few letters stay full size.
How to Use the Small Text Generator
To use the small text generator, type your text, pick a small text style, and copy it. The process takes 4 steps:
- Type your text in the box at the top. All small text styles update as you type.
- Compare the styles: superscript, small caps, subscript and the mixed superscript and subscript style.
- Tap Copy on the style you want.
- Paste the text into a bio, a name, a caption, a chat or a document.
The 3 Small Text Styles
There are 3 small text styles, and each style covers a different share of the alphabet:
| Small text style | Example | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Superscript (tiny text) | ˢᵐᵃˡˡ ᵀᵉˣᵗ | 26 of 26 letters, digits 0 to 9, + − = ( ) |
| Small caps | ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴛᴇxᴛ | 25 of 26 letters, with no small capital X |
| Subscript | ₛₘₐₗₗ ₜₑₓₜ | 17 of 26 letters, digits 0 to 9, + − = ( ) |
| Superscript and subscript mix | ˢₘᵃₗˡ ₜᵉₓᵗ | Alternates raised and lowered letters |
Small caps reads best for names and headings, as every letter sits at the same height. Superscript is the smallest small text in Unicode. Capital C, F, S, X, Y and Z in superscript use the small letter shape, as Unicode has no raised capital for them.
Small Text Alphabet Chart From A to Z
Here is every small text letter the generator uses. A dash means the letter stays full size:
| Letter | Superscript | Small caps | Subscript |
|---|---|---|---|
| A a | ᴬ ᵃ | ᴀ | ₐ |
| B b | ᴮ ᵇ | ʙ | – |
| C c | ᶜ ᶜ | ᴄ | – |
| D d | ᴰ ᵈ | ᴅ | – |
| E e | ᴱ ᵉ | ᴇ | ₑ |
| F f | ᶠ ᶠ | ꜰ | – |
| G g | ᴳ ᵍ | ɢ | – |
| H h | ᴴ ʰ | ʜ | ₕ |
| I i | ᴵ ⁱ | ɪ | ᵢ |
| J j | ᴶ ʲ | ᴊ | ⱼ |
| K k | ᴷ ᵏ | ᴋ | ₖ |
| L l | ᴸ ˡ | ʟ | ₗ |
| M m | ᴹ ᵐ | ᴍ | ₘ |
| N n | ᴺ ⁿ | ɴ | ₙ |
| O o | ᴼ ᵒ | ᴏ | ₒ |
| P p | ᴾ ᵖ | ᴘ | ₚ |
| Q q | ᑫ ᑫ | ǫ | – |
| R r | ᴿ ʳ | ʀ | ᵣ |
| S s | ˢ ˢ | ꜱ | ₛ |
| T t | ᵀ ᵗ | ᴛ | ₜ |
| U u | ᵁ ᵘ | ᴜ | ᵤ |
| V v | ⱽ ᵛ | ᴠ | ᵥ |
| W w | ᵂ ʷ | ᴡ | – |
| X x | ˣ ˣ | x | ₓ |
| Y y | ʸ ʸ | ʏ | – |
| Z z | ᶻ ᶻ | ᴢ | – |
Superscript q (ᑫ) and small caps q (ǫ) are look-alikes from other alphabets, as Unicode has no true raised q.
Small Numbers and Math Symbols
Small numbers and math symbols come in 2 sets: superscript ⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹ ⁺⁻⁼⁽⁾ and subscript ₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉ ₊₋₌₍₎. Here are 4 common uses:
- Powers: E = mc², x²⁺¹ and 10⁻³
- Chemistry: H₂O and CO₂. Copy the subscript digit alone and paste it after normal capitals, as subscript has no H or C.
- Ordinals: 1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ and ⁴ᵗʰ
- Footnotes: a claim¹ or a note⁽²⁾
Where Small Text Works
Small text works in 7 of the 8 places people paste it most, and each place suits one small style best:
| Place | Best small style | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Small caps | A tagline under the name in a 150-character bio | |
| TikTok | Superscript | A quiet note at the end of an 80-character bio |
| Discord | Small caps | Channel names such as ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ |
| X (Twitter) | Small caps | Display names, with 2 counted per small letter in posts |
| Facebook and WhatsApp | Superscript | Asides in chats and status lines |
| Minecraft | Small caps | Server menus, scoreboards and item names |
| Google Docs and Word | Superscript | Footnote marks and powers such as x² |
| Usernames and @handles | None | Most apps allow plain letters, numbers and underscores only |
Platform limits are on the Instagram fonts, Discord fonts and TikTok fonts pages.
How X Counts Small Text
X counts most small text letters as 2 characters, so small text never saves space in a post. Here is how X counts the words tiny text in each style:
| Style | Text | X count |
|---|---|---|
| Plain | tiny text | 9 |
| Small caps | ᴛɪɴʏ ᴛᴇxᴛ | 13 |
| Superscript | ᵗⁱⁿʸ ᵗᵉˣᵗ | 15 |
| Subscript | ₜᵢₙy ₜₑₓₜ | 16 |
Switch the preview to X (Twitter) post to see the weighted count for your own text. More on the X fonts page.
Does Small Text Hurt Search and Accessibility?
Yes, small caps hide words from search, and all small text is hard for screen readers. Superscript and subscript letters carry an official link to the normal letter in Unicode, so search tools that normalize text still match them. Small caps have no such link, so ᴀʟᴇx never matches alex in a search box. Screen readers skip small letters or read each one by its Unicode name. Keep names, keywords and key details in normal text.
Is Small Text the Same as a Small Font?
No, small text is a set of tiny characters, while a small font is a smaller size of the same letters. Word, Google Docs and email editors have a font size menu, and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) has the <small> tag for web pages. Use the small text generator for bios, names, captions and chats, where no size menu exists. Extremely small text below superscript size does not exist in Unicode, as superscript letters are the smallest characters.
Tips for Small Text
Here are 5 tips for small text that people can read:
- Use small text for one line, such as a tagline under your name.
- Pick small caps for names and headings, as small caps is the most even style.
- Pick superscript for footnotes and powers, such as x² and 1ˢᵗ.
- Paste a test first into the real field and check the result on your phone.
- Mix sizes on purpose: a normal word followed by a ᵗⁱⁿʸ ⁿᵒᵗᵉ draws the eye.
