What Is Glitch Text?

Glitch text is regular text with extra Unicode combining marks stacked on each letter, so the letters look broken, noisy or haunted. Glitch text goes by 4 other names: zalgo text, cursed text, creepy text and corrupted text.

Each combining mark is a real character that attaches to the letter before it. A single mark makes an accent, such as é. Ten marks on one letter make the tall, messy stacks people call zalgo.

Why Is It Called Zalgo Text?

The name comes from Zalgo, an internet horror meme from 2004. Members of the Something Awful forums edited cheerful comic strips so that the characters ended in distorted horror, with the line "He comes" attached to an invented chaos entity named Zalgo. The meme spread through creepypasta culture, and messy, overflowing text became its trademark look.

How Does the Glitch Text Generator Work?

The glitch text generator adds random marks from the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300 to U+036F) after every letter. The block holds 112 marks, and Unicode assigns each one a combining class that decides where it sits.

Above, Through and Below Marks

FontGlint sorts the block into 3 pools by combining class:

• Above (class 230): 51 marks, such as ◌̀ ◌́ ◌̂ ◌̃ ◌̈ and ◌ͣ ◌ͤ, that stack upward.
• Through (class 1): 5 overlay marks, U+0334 to U+0338 (◌̴ ◌̵ ◌̶ ◌̷ ◌̸), that cut across the letter.
• Below (class 220): 39 marks, such as ◌̖ ◌̗ ◌̘ ◌̙ and ◌͓ ◌͔, that drip downward.

Each style uses a fixed pattern seed, so the same text always gives the same glitch. Tap New pattern in the mixer to get a fresh random version.

Glitch Intensity Levels

There are 5 glitch intensity levels, from barely glitched to fully cursed. The table shows the maximum marks per letter and the length of the word Hello (5 letters) at each level:

Each letter gets between about half and the maximum number of marks, so the glitch looks uneven on purpose.

How to Make Glitch Text

To make glitch text, type your words, pick a glitch level or set the mixer sliders, and copy the result. There are 4 steps:

1. Enter your text in the box at the top. Short words and names glitch best.
2. Pick a ready style from the list, such as Light Zalgo or Dripping Glitch.
3. Or use the custom glitch mixer: set Above and Below from 0 to 15 and Through from 0 to 3, and tap New pattern until you like the shape.
4. Copy and paste the glitch text into your post, name or message.

Glitch Text Styles

FontGlint has 11 glitch text styles in 3 groups: intensity levels, direction styles, and glitched alphabets.

• Mark effects: tilde strike (t̴i̴l̴d̴e̴) and slashed text (s̸l̸a̸s̸h̸) give a cleaner, controlled glitch. See strikethrough text.

Glitch Text for Discord, TikTok, Instagram, X and Games

Glitch Text for Discord

Discord has no zalgo command, so paste glitch text into messages, server names, channel topics and your About Me. Display names allow 32 characters, and every mark counts toward the limit: Light Zalgo turns a 5-letter name into as many as 15 characters. See Discord fonts.

TikTok and Instagram show glitch text in bios, captions and comments. Light and medium levels display cleanly, and heavy stacks can overlap the line above or get cut off in the bio area.

X displays combining marks in posts and the bio, and each mark counts toward the character limit. Keep glitched posts to a few words.

Glitch Text for Game Names

Many games remove combining marks from player names or reject them. Use Mini Glitch or Light Zalgo for a game name, and test it before you pay for a rename.

Glitch Text vs Glitch Font

Glitch text is copy and paste Unicode, while a glitch font is a font file with broken letter shapes built in. Glitch text works in apps with no font menu. A glitch font works in design apps, such as Canva, Photoshop or a video editor, after you install it.

Google Fonts offers a free glitch font named Rubik Glitch. Video editors add moving glitch effects, such as red, green and blue (RGB) split and scan lines, that no text character can copy.

Glitch Text Problems and Fixes

There are 5 common glitch text problems, and each one has a fix:

• Marks overlap the line above or below. Lower the Above and Below sliders, or add a blank line before and after the glitch text.
• The app removes the marks. Name and search fields often strip combining marks. Use glitch text in posts, bios and messages instead.
• The text is too long for the field. Every mark is a character. Pick a lighter level or a shorter word.
• Some marks disappear in very heavy text. Unicode's Stream-Safe Text Format limits a run of combining marks to 30, so some software splits or trims longer stacks.
• Screen readers struggle. Assistive tools read out each mark or skip the word. Keep important information in plain text.
