What Is a Gothic Font Generator?

A Gothic font generator is a text converter that swaps each letter for a Unicode blackletter character, so words take the look of medieval calligraphy anywhere you paste them. How Gothic Text Works

Unicode holds 2 blackletter alphabets in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block: Mathematical Fraktur from 𝔄 (U+1D504) and Mathematical Bold Fraktur from 𝕬 (U+1D56C). 5 regular Fraktur capitals sit in an older block, so ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ can look slightly different from the rest. The generator swaps each letter for its Fraktur twin. Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay plain.

How to Use the Gothic Font Generator

Blackletter, Old English and Fraktur: What Is the Difference?

Blackletter is the family name, and Old English and Fraktur are members of it. Blackletter was the main book hand of Western Europe from the 12th to the 15th century, and the Renaissance called it Gothic. There are 4 main blackletter styles:

• Textura: tall, narrow and woven, the type of the Gutenberg Bible of about 1455.
• Rotunda: rounder and more open, common in Italy and Spain.
• Schwabacher: a heavier German style of the late 15th century.
• Fraktur: the German style with broken curves, used in print until the Nazi government banned it in January 1941.

Old English is the English-speaking name for blackletter lettering, as in the Old English Text MT font. Fraktur comes from the Latin fractura, meaning broken, after its broken strokes.

The Original Gothic Alphabet

The Gothic alphabet is a separate script: Bishop Wulfila created it in the 4th century to translate the Bible into the Gothic language. Unicode stores it in the Gothic block (U+10330 to U+1034F), and the Gothic alphabet style above maps your letters to it by sound, such as 𐌲𐍉𐍄𐌷.
